Living in Stokenchurch

Stokenchurch is the main village in the area and provides virtually all the local amenities. 

In Studley Green there is a community centre, garden centre, and café. But, the hamlets have no shops, churches, public houses or restaurants. A new residential development at Horsley's Green (currently being built, as of 2022) will bring some new facilities.

Adult Education

Bucks County Council hold a number of further education classes at the Stokenchurch Community Centre in Bartholomew Tipping Way. For more information call their help desk on either 0845 0454040 or 01296 382403 or try their website www.adultlearningbcc.ac.uk. 

Banks

There are no banks in Stokenchurch, however personal and business banking can be done at our local post office on the Wycombe Road. There are also ATMs in the convenience stores in the village, some may charge for withdrawals. 

Care and Activities for the Elderly

A number of groups meet regularly to provide care and entertainment for the elderly.

The Day Centre meets at Longburrow Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays.  For more details call 01494 520587 on either Monday or Wednesday until 2 o'clock or phone 07518 738761.

There is a Community Transport service for elderly and disabled villagers, (which is also available for all Parishioners to use). They have a voicemail service which can be contacted on 01494 485839.  The Community Transport group urgently require relief volunteers to help escorting clients who use the bus. Training is given. If you can help please call the number above.

STOPAG (Stokenchurch Older Persons' Action Group) meets on second Thursday of the month at the Stokenchurch Community Centre in Bartholomew Tipping Way.  Invariably they start with a light lunch followed by a talk given by a guest speaker.  In addition the over sixties have monthly lunches at the Fleur de Lis.  These are held on the third Tuesday of the month - two courses and tea or coffee for £7.  For more details of either STOPAG or the lunches contact Anne Sherman on 01494 482344.

There are also a number of church groups providing a range of activities.  In addition to the above Chiltern Grange Care Home (Phone 01494 480294) is situated on the Ibstone Road.

Churches

There is now only one church in the village:

Church of England - The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Church Path, Stokenchurch. St Peter and St Paul's is now part of the South Chilterns Group of Churches (with Cadmore End, Ibstone and Lane End)

The Methodist church has now closed, but the Methodist community still meet in Marlow

The Studley Green Christian Fellowship meets at the Studley Green Community Centre. There are churches and places of worship for other denominations in High Wycombe, Marlow and Oxford.

Council Offices

The Parish Council offices are located in Longburrow Hall, just off of Park Lane.  This runs down from the 'Royal Oak' pub towards Mallards Court and Hallbottom Farm.  Longburrow is just on the left hand side

Please note that the gates to the Longburrow car park will be closed from the times on the notices (9:00pm) until 8:00am.

Country Walks

There are many miles of walks on the footpaths and bridleways surrounding the parish. Examples can be found in the Chiltern Society Footpath map No. 14 - Stokenchurch and Chinnor. Stokenchurch is on both the Chiltern Way, a 125 mile long distance path, and on the Chiltern Cycleway, a 170 mile circular cycle route. Dog Rescue

The renowned Stokenchurch Dog Rescue Centre is located at Tower Farm, just to the west of the village on the A40. They are always on the lookout for volunteer dog-walkers.  In addition they hold fund-raising jumble sales, normally on the last Saturday of the month during the summer.  For more details check www.stokenchurchdogrescue.co.uk or call 01494 482695. 

Library Service

Stokenchurch Community Library is on the edge of the village green, just east of the Kings Hotel.  It is a community library, supported by Bucks County Council, but run entirely by volunteers.  The library in Stokenchurch is open:

Tuesday - 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Wednesday - 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Thursday - 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Saturday - 10 a.m. until 1.p.m.

M40 Chilterns Environment Group (M40CEG)

This group is active in the village and campaigns to mitigate the impact of the M40 on local communities immediately adjacent to the motorway. In 2014 it celebrated its tenth anniversary and is now supported by 13 Parish Councils, 2 County Councils, Wycombe District Council and 4 local MPs.  Details of the group can be found on their website at www.m40-chilterns.org.uk.

Medical Centre

Multi User Games Area (MUGA)

A Multi User Games Area (MUGA), laid out for team games such as five a side football and netball is located at Longburrow Hall. Use is free of charge on a first come, first served basis, if someone is already using the facility you may ask to share with them but please do not ask them to leave as open space areas are available to everyone. Anyone who would like to use the changing room facilities, these can be pre-booked by ringing the Bookings Clerk at Longburrow on 01494 482403 between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. weekdays. During winter evenings the MUGA can be floodlight Lighting token are available in the office for the sum of £2.25 per token giving one hours lighting.

Parking Places

There are four places designated as public parking areas:

Police

A telephone giving direct access to the police is available outside the Police Office. The office is situated in front of the entrance to the Positive Steps Nursery.

Post Office

There is a sub post office in Palmer's Stores on the Wycombe Road, close to Junction 5 Business Park and the Marlow Road junction.

Public Telephone

There is a public telephone outside Wavy Line Stores in New Road (opposite Jubilee Road).

Pubs and Places to Eat

There are three public houses in Stokenchurch, all providing food as well as drinks:

The Kings Hotel, a former sixteenth century coaching inn overlooking the village green, provides accommodation as well as dining and conference facilities.

In addition to the public houses (which provide takeaway services) there is a fish and chip shop and a Chinese takeaway on the village green adjacent to the Kings Hotel.

Coffee on the Green is located on the common.  A wide range of cakes, sandwiches, teas and coffees are available.

Chris' Cafe is a transport cafe and motel in Studley Green.

Recycling

There is a bottle and a clothes bank in Church Street, off the village green and just behind the Memorial Hall.

There are one amenity sites outside the village that will take unwanted household items and large quantities of garden waste. It is at Booker (High Heavens close by Wycombe Air Park).

In addition there are bi-weekly collections of the Blue (plastic, tins, bottles) bins, Green (garden waste) bins and recyclable paper/card boxes. The brown (food) bin is collected each week. Grey (landfill) bins are collected bi-weekly alterately with the blue/green/paper collections

Rubbish and Refuse Collection

Rubbish and Refuse collections are the responsibility of Buckinghamshire Council. For full details see their website here or call 01494 421415.

Schools and Nurseries

There are two primary schools in the parish:

In addition there are Church of England primary schools in the neighbouring parishes of Cadmore End, Radnage, Ibstone, Aston Rowant and Lewknor .

There are no secondary schools within the parish. Pupils travel to High Wycombe, Watlington / Chalgrove, Marlow and Henley to further their education. Similarly, there are private schools in towns close by, particularly in High Wycombe and Oxford.

There are a number of pre-school groups and nurseries in the area.

Shops & Garages

There are three general stores in Stokenchurch, all offering a range of groceries, newspapers and magazines, with some fruit and vegetables.

There are four further shops, two on the village green providing print services and selling wood burning stoves; an off licence - Globe Wines - on the Wycombe Road just past the library and one selling equestrian tack and gear at the junction of New Road and the Wycombe Road.

There is a pharmacy next to the Kings Hotel.

In addition to petrol, the filling station (Shell) offers a range of basic of household goods.

There is a garage - Stokenchurch Service Centre (opposite Raven Copse on the same side of the A40 as the Mowchak Indian Restaurant). This does not sell petrol but provides servicing and repair facilities.

There are two hairdressers in the village.

The nearest large supermarkets are in High Wycombe (Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Lidl, Aldi and Tesco), Thame (Sainsbury's and Waitrose) and Wheatley (Asda).

Red Rose run one service to Oxford in the weekday morning rush hour, and one in the opposite direction in the early evening. Oxford can be accessed by taking the Route 40 to Thame and then changing to the Arriva Route 280 service.

As the National Express service is classified as 'inter-city', the fare to High Wycombe is higher than the local buses.

Note that the Sunday service to and from High Wycombe is operated by Vale Travel, not Arriva, and operates as Route 48 / 48A.

The nearest railway station is in High Wycombe (Chiltern Railways) with frequent services to London and to Birmingham.  The average journey time to London (Marylebone) is about 30 minutes.  The station has a decent sized car park and is also close to the Wycombe District Council car park in Easton Street. There is also stations at Saunderton and Princes Risborough.

Veterinary Services

There is a veterinary practice at the junction of New Road and the A40. In addition there are boarding kennels at Bigmore Lane on the Marlow Road, just outside the village.

Youth Activities

There is a thriving Guide and Scout community in the village. A Youth Club meets at the Studley Green Community Centre in Bar on Tuesday evenings.
