LIBRARY LATEST - 29 JANUARY

Last week a meeting took place of those villagers interested in forming a 'management committee' to take the community library proposal forward. It was a good meeting and positive progress was made with participants concluding that there were no obvious insurmountable hurdles.

A further meeting has been arranged to identify what the key steps are and to get the whole process under way. Keep a watch on this website for further news of progress.

PARKING IN THE VILLAGE CENTRE

There have been several comments at recent Parish Council meetings about parking in the village centre, particularly outside CJ Stores. At the meeting of 4th January a parishionier raised the issue and said that he feared that sooner or later inconsiderate parking would cause a serious accident.

The Parish Council have had discussions with the owner of the store, the Thames Valley Police and Bucks County Council Highways department. In the main the problem is caused by thoughtless parking by delivery lorries, which block sightlines to the pelican crossing (or even, on occasions, park on the crossing).

Action has been promised by all three parties with whom discussions have been held, but as we are all too aware, this takes time. In the meantime villagers can help by:

1. Being cognisant of the problem and taking care to park their own cars safely, preferably in the car park outside the King's Hotel.

2. Report any unsafe parking to the police on their non-emergency telephone number, 101 (which has recently replaced the old 0845 number). Please give details together with a date and time.

SPEEDING SIGN VANDALISED

The Parish Council recently hired a speed indicator device to warn traffic of the 30 m.p.h speed limit through the village. This was vandalised over Christmas and has had to be taken down. Although this was only a token attempt to slow traffic down, it is unfortunate that the vandal was probably someone from within the village.

There are a number of CCTV cameras in the village which have recorded acts of vandalism. Evidence from these cameras can be used to track down the guilty few.

LAND FOR SALE AT MUDDS BANK and WATER END

An estate agent's sign advertising land for sale 'with planning permission for stabling and with further development opportunities' has recently been put up on a plot close to Water End.

Planning permission was granted by Wycombe District Council but specifically for a stable only in conjunction with using the land for equestrian purposes.

The Parish Council wants to make it clear that they are still vehemently opposed to any development of any kind on the land for sale to the east of the village.

GOOD NEWS FROM THE YOUTH CLUB

An article in the Bucks Free Press has highlighted that another village institution is currently winning the battle against funding reductions and threatened closure. It said that three dedicated youth workers have continued to keep a club open after funding was pulled by Buckinghamshire County Council.

Stokenchurch Youth Club, which is held at the Community Centre in Bartholomew Tipping Way on Fridays, attracts about 60 youngsters each week.

Bucks County Council had originally proposed closing the Stokenchurch Youth Club which is open every Friday at the Stokenchurch Community Centre.

The three organisers, Richard Saunders, his son Ashley and Julie Pearce agreed to continue help running the club on a volunteer basis after the council pulled funding. There are now six leaders as they have managed to gather three new recruits.

Bucks County Council cut the Youth Services budget by £1.6m. and removed 100 youth workers from the wage bill, expecting volunteers to take over the clubs. Stokenchurch was one which stepped up to the challenge and set up a committee to get everything into place.

Mr Entwistle, chairman of the committee, said it had been a hard slog. He said Action4Youth helped a lot and the Stokenchurch Educational Charity gave £100 to get things going.

They were given a grant by BCC for the transition period, which he said should last for the next three years.

He said: "The challenge now is now to keep raising funds into the future."

Snow is fun when you're young or have four legs........

Not everyone in your community is able to get out and about in the snow. In heavy snow, our home carers can't always reach vulnerable people. Can you help?

Can you help clear snow from a driveway or path when our home carers can't reach someone? Or do you have a 4x4 vehicle and can help drive our home carers where they are needed? If you can help, please let us know. Please tell us your name, town/village & contact details & if you can help with simple snow clearance or whether you have a 4x4. Email locality-services@buckscc.gov.uk or telephone 01296 383409.

WHEN IS NEWS NO NEWS?

Recent feedback has commented that some news items are being left on the website when they appear to have lost their immediacy.

Recognising that some people only check this website on an occasional basis, we leave items up for as long as we believe new readers will find them interesting.  Content of the website is reviewed regularly.

However.... we do value your feedback, only by getting comments like the one above will we know whether or not we are meeting the needs of the village.  Use this link clerk@stokenchurch.org.uk to tell us what you think, or call John Capell on 01494 482403 and leave a message.
