Our Village

Stokenchurch

The main settlement is the village of Stokenchurch itself although there are several smaller hamlets in the parish including Studley Green, Beacons Bottom, Horsleys Green and Water End, all to the east of the main village. In the 2001 census the population was just under 5,000.

The M40 runs through the centre of the parish, making London, Oxford and the Midlands very accessible.

Mixed farmland and woodlands surround the parish. Most of this is either Green Belt or within the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the result that the village has been protected from over-development. In addition the centre of the village is a designated conservation area. A short distance to the west is the Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve.

At 700 feet it is one of the highest villages on the recently designated 'Chiltern Way'. It boasts one of the densest populations of red kites in Europe. As a result the area attracts walkers, countryside lovers and wild life enthusiasts from far and wide.

Stokenchurch has won the Buckinghamshire 'Large Village of the Year' competition three times. This competition, sponsored by Calor Gas Ltd, highlights six major aspects of village life: a sense of community life, business support for the community, activities for young people, services for the elderly, the environment and the availability and use of information and computer technology.
